French explorers have penetrated Gabon's dense jungles…
1876 CE to 1887 CE
The most famous, Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza, uses Gabonese bearers and guides in his search for the headwaters of the Congo river.
Several Bantu groups live in the area that is now Gabon when France officially occupies it in 1885, though it will not administer it until 1903.
Savorgnan de Brazza founds the town of Franceville, and is later colonial governor.
