A wave of iconoclasm (known as the Beeldenstorm) spreads through the Low Countries from August to October 1566.

Calvinists, angry with their being persecuted by the Roman Catholic Church and opposed to the Catholic images of saints (which in their eyes conflict with the Second Commandment), destroy statues in hundreds of churches and monasteries throughout the Netherlands.
