The proposed sea level canal is to…
1880 CE
The proposed sea level canal is to have uniform depth of nine meters (twenty-nine point five feet), a bottom width of twenty-two meters meters (seventy-two point two feet), and a width at water level of about twenty-seven point five meters (ninety point two feet), and involves excavation estimated at one hundred and twenty million square meters (one hundred and fifty-seven million cubic yards).
It is proposed that a dam be built at Gamboa to control the flooding of the Chagres river, along with channels to carry water away from the canal.
However, the Gamboa dam is later found to be impracticable, and the Chagres River problem is left unresolved.
