Auguste Rodin, commissioned in 1891 to portray Balzac for the Société des Gens de Lettres (Society of Men of Letters), gives himself over completely to massive research designed to translate the several Balzac portraits into sculpture.

He obtains the exact measurements of the novelist's body by finding his former tailor.

After much conjecture and experimentation to find an appropriate posture for the statue, he finally conceives of the writer as partly draped.

The concisely designed model resembles a menhir, or upright prehistoric altar stone (foreshadowing the simplicity of modern art).
