White solidarity in Georgia has been strong from the war's beginning, as the planters in the Black Belt form a common cause with upcountry yeomen farmers in defense of the Confederacy against the Yankees.

However, disillusionment has set in by 1863, with class tensions becoming more serious, with food riots, desertions, and growing Unionist activity in the northern mountain region.

Approximately five thousand Georgians serve in the union army in units including the 1st Georgia Infantry Battalion, the 1st Alabama Cavalry Regiment, and a number of East Tennessean regiments.

Governor Joseph E. Brown has tried to divert attention by blaming the Confederate officials in Richmond, especially President Jefferson Davis, and insisting that many Georgia troops be kept at home.
