Into this troubled atmosphere steps Muhammad Ahmad ibn al­ Sayyid Abdallah, a faqir or holy man who combines personal magne­tism with religious zealotry and who is determined to expel the Turks and restore Islam to its early purity.

The son of a Dongola boatbuilder, Muhammad Ahmad had joined the Sammaniyyah order.

Later, as a sheikh of the order, he spends several years in seclusion and gained a reputation as a mystic and teacher.

In 1880 he becomes a Sammaniyyah leader.
