Gustav Klimt had opened an independent studio…
1888 CE
After studying at the Vienna School of Decorative Arts, his work during this era is typical of the prevailing classical-realist style of academic painting, as can be seen in his murals for the Vienna Burgtheater, painted in 1888 when he is twenty-six, and on the staircase of the new Kunsthistorisches Museum (Art History Museum).
Klimt receives the Golden Order of Merit from Emperor Franz Josef I of Austria for his contributions to murals painted in the Burgtheater; he also becomes an honorary member of the University of Munich and the University of Vienna.
