Prince of Wales Fort returns to the Hudson's Bay Company in 1783.
Its importance hereafter will wane with the decline in the fur trade, although the post is refounded a little way up the river.
Hearne returns in 1783 to establish the fort at the mouth of the Churchill River but finds trade has deteriorated.
The native population has been decimated by smallpox and starvation due to the lack of normal hunting supplies of powder and shot.
Matonabbee has committed suicide and the rest of Churchill’s leading natives have moved to other posts.
