Captain Heintzelman had returned to San Diego,…
March 1852 CE
With one hundred and sixty infantry and cavalry, Heintzelman arrives at the fort in March, only to find it nearly destroyed.
All of the captain's personal belongings left at the post are missing or destroyed, the fruit orchards are withered and his raft sunk.
Heintzelman is very upset and will proclaim in his book that Captain Davidson was a coward for abandoning the fort.
Captain George Stoneman, who will serve with distinction in the American Civil War, commands the American cavalry during this march.
