Several shotguns had been found near the…
October 1890 CE
One is a muzzle-loading shotgun, a type which is widely used in New Orleans and throughout the South, but which police claim is a "favorite" of Italians.
Another has a hinged stock.
Local newspapers report that such guns are imported from Italy; in fact they are manufactured by the W. Richards Company.
Spurred to action by the popular accounts of Hennessy's murder, a twenty-nine-year-old newspaper salesman named Thomas Duffy walkd into the prison on October 17, 1890, seeks out Antonio Scaffidi, whom he had heard is a suspect, and shoots him in the neck with a revolver.
Scaffidi survives the attack, only to be lynched a few months later.
Duffy will eventually be onvicted of assault and sentenced to six months in prison.
