His Jupiter and Sémélé (1896; Musée Gustave Moreau), painted when he is seventy, is the culmination of his tendencies to portray exotic eroticism and violence under dramatic lighting. (His nonfigurative paintings, done in a loose manner with thick impasto, will lead him to be called a herald of Abstract Expressionism.)
