1263 CE
Henry, ruling imperiously, continues to implement costly and inept policies.
De Montfort, at the invitation of the barons, who are now convinced of the king's hostility to all reforms, returns to England to lead them in a war against the Crown in support of the ignored Provisions of Oxford and Westminster.
Raising a rebellion with the avowed object of restoring the form of government which the Provisions had ordained, he forges a coalition of magnates and representatives from various towns, including radicals from London.
The Royalists are led by Prince Edward, Henry's eldest son.
Civil war, known as the Second Barons' War, follows.
For a few weeks it seems as though the royalists are at his mercy, but after a few inconclusive skirmishes, he and the barons make the mistake of accepting Henry's offer to abide by the arbitration of Louis IX of France.
