Henry, with no aid from the princes…
February 1074 CE
Henry, with no aid from the princes of the empire, had on January 27, 1074, stood at the head of what is only a small army compared to the much larger Saxon one at Hersfeld.
Both sides are afraid to join in battle, but for different reasons; Henry probably because of his obvious inferiority.
The Saxon leaders, by contrast, are aware that a victory by their army, consisting mainly of peasants, would strengthen the position of the latter, a development hey not favor.
So it happens that on February 2, 1074, peace negotiations in Gerstungen take place, resulting in a settlement between the warring parties.
Henry has agreed to several concessions, reasoning that the Saxons would break their end of the deal eventually.
The main outcome is that Henry IV agrees to the slighting of his castles on the edge of the Harz.
