Gair invents the paperboard folding carton by accident: a metal ruler used to crease bags shifts position and cuts the bag.
Gair finds that by cutting and creasing paperboard in one operation, he cab make prefabricated cartons.
He will ultimately enter the corrugated fiberboard shipping container business in the 1900s.
His idea will be developed and utilized by E. S. & A. Robinson with whom he has long-term business dealings.
Gair will found a paper empire and occupy several buildings in Brooklyn's Dumbo area, many of which still bear his name.
