Homer Dodge Martin employs the broken color…
1893 CE
Martin had been one of the founders of the Society of American Artists in 1877.
On his second trip to Europe, in 1882, he had lived primarily in Normandy and Brittany, saw the work of the Impressionists, but did practically no painting himself.
By 1887 Martin had returned to New York City.
Martin's painting is generally characterized by its spacious design, brilliant color, and an underlying gravity or gentle melancholy.
Throughout his life Martin has suffered a series of ailments, a deepening sense of melancholy, and progressive deterioration of his eyesight.
As blindness encroaches poverty and poor health induce him to relocate to St. Paul, Minnesota, where he has relatives, in 1893.
