Revolutionary forces capture Monaco in 1793, and it remains under direct French control until 1814, when the Grimaldi family returns to the throne.

Between 1793 and 1814 Monaco is occupied by the French (in this period much of Europe has been overrun by the French under command of Napoleon).

The principality is reestablished in 1814 only to be designated a protectorate of the Kingdom of Sardinia by the Congress of Vienna in 1815.
