Captain Nathaniel Lyon, a West pointer and Connecticut native, takes command of a detachment of soldiers at Fort Scott in 1858 to restore law and order during the chaos of “Bleeding Kansas”. (Originally a Democrat with few convictions about slavery, Lyon will witness the slavery controversy in Kansas and subsequently harden into a furiously abolitionist Republican.)
