Major Sylvain Salnave of the Haitian army…
1865 CE
Major Sylvain Salnave of the Haitian army begins his takeover of the North and Artibonite parts of the country in 1865.
By May 15, both Geffrard and his government troops clash with Salnave’s Northern troops.
After using the Royal Navy for gunboat diplomacy with Salnave, the Geffrard regime is in ruins, especially financially.
Geffrard reopens old wounds between North, West, and South Haitians and brings foreigners into domestic affairs, although he does encourage a policy of national reconciliation with some success.
