Edward G. Acheson first synthesizes graphite accidentally while performing high-temperature experiments on carborundum in 1890.

The American inventor finds that at about 4,150°C (7,500°F), the silicon in the carborundum vaporizes, leaving the carbon behind in the form of graphite.
