Heroin is developed in Germany from the opium constituent morphine as a stronger and supposedly nonaddictive form of morphine.

Heinrich Dreser finds in 1895 that treating morphine with acetic anhydride yields an opiate that is four to eight times as potent as morphine in its pain-killing properties.

Dreser is an employee of the Bayer Company of Elberfeld, Germany.
