Union soldiers, in an attempt to curb…
August 1863 CE
Union soldiers, in an attempt to curb the growing guerrilla problem along the Kansas-Missouri border, imprison a number of the womenfolk of known bushwhackers in a deteriorated building in Kansas City.
Among the internees are two sisters of William Anderson.
The building collapses on August 14, killing some of these women, including Anderson’s sister, Josephine; another sister is maimed for life.
This incident intensifies Anderson’s hatred for the Union cause (and is later cited by proslavery guerillas as one of the primary reasons for Quantrill’s raid on Lawrence the following week).
