The hordes of the illiterate but shrewd…
April 1840 CE
The hordes of the illiterate but shrewd and charismatic swineherd turned highwayman Rafael Carrera, the de facto ruler of much of Guatemala, rout the smaller forces of Francisco Morazán in late spring of 1840, defeating the last of several attempts by Morazán to reforge the dissolved Federal Republic of Central America of which he had served three nonconsecutive terms as president.
As a result, Morazán goes into exile in northern New Granada (Colombia) or what is now Panama.
