Jordan holds its first parliamentary elections in twenty-two years in November 1989.
Opposition groups, particularly the fundamentalist Muslim Brotherhood, gain more seats than the pro-government candidates, and the newly elected prime minister, Mudar Badran, promises to lift the martial law that has been in place since 1967 (a promise that will not fully be kept until July 1991).
