The Senate, in the face of revived…
May 1804 CE
The Senate, in the face of revived royalist hostility, petitions Bonaparte to establish a hereditary dynasty.
Napoleon uses the plot against his life to justify the re-creation of a hereditary monarchy in France, with himself as emperor, as a Bourbon restoration will be more difficult if the Bonapartist succession is entrenched in the constitution.
The French Senate duly proclaims him Emperor of the French on May 21, 1804.
