Two hundred and four men are trapped…

January 1862 CE

Two hundred and four men are trapped and die underground in the Hartley Colliery disaster of     January 16, 1862, when the only shaft becomes blocked.

The beam of the pit's pumping engine had broken and fallen down the shaft, trapping the men below.

The disaster will prompt change in UK law that henceforth will require all collieries to have at least two independent means of escape.
