February 1949 CE
Israel's proposed constitution is never ratified (nor will Israel, to date, ever adopt a formal, written constitution).
The Constituent Assembly becomes Israel's first parliament or Knesset (Hebrew: "Assembly") on February 16, 1949; the Knesset elects Chaim Weizmann the first president of Israel on the same day.
Israel's first regular election in 1949 returns David Ben-Gurion to power but does not give his Mapai (Labor) Party a majority. (This sets a pattern, and every Israeli government since independence has been formed as a coalition.)
