Iximche at the time of the Spanish…
April 1524 CE
Iximche at the time of the Spanish Conquest is the second most important city in the Guatemalan Highlands, after the K'iche' capital at Q'umarkaj.
The Spanish on April 14, 1524, soon after the defeat of the K'iche', are invited into Iximche and are well received by the lords Belehe Qat and Cahi Imox.
The Kaqchikel kings provide native soldiers to assist the conquistadors against continuing K'iche' resistance and to help with the defeat of the neighboring Tz'utuhil kingdom.
The Spanish only stay briefly in Iximche before continuing through Atitlán, Escuintla and Cuscatlán.
The Kaqchikel appear to have entered into an alliance with the Spanish to defeat their enemies, the Tz'utujil, whose capital is Tecpan Atitlan.
Pedro de Alvarado sends two Kaqchikel messengers to Tecpan Atitlan at the request of the Kaqchikel lords, both of whom are killed by the Tz'utujil.
When news of the killing of the messengers reaches the Spanish at Iximche, the conquistadors march against the Tz'utujil with their Kaqchikel allies.
