Ze'ev Jabotinsky, pursuing his project of a Jewish Legion for the Palestinian front, has finally persuaded the British government to allow military participation by Jewish refugees from the Ottoman Empire.
The formation of a Jewish regiment is officially announced in August 1917.
Designated as the 38th Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers, the unit includes British volunteers, members of the former Zion Mule Corps and a large number of Russian Jews.
Jabotinsky, thirty-six, serves as a lieutenant.
