August 1876 CE
James Abbott McNeill Whistler, engaged in decorative work as well as portraits, is also a force in book design.
He begins painting the Peacock Room for No. 49 Prince's Gate, London, the house of F. R. Leyland, a Liverpool shipping magnate. (The decoration, completed in 1877, will fail to please his patron, who feels Whistler has exceeded his commission, particularly in painting over some antique leather. The famous room will be moved in 1919 to the Freer Gallery of Art).
