James Knox Polk, installed as United States…
December 1845 CE
James Knox Polk, installed as United States President on March 4, 1845, declares that “the people of this continent alone have the right to decide their own destiny”, and, with strong popular support, pushes for statehood for Texas.
On December 2, Polk announces to Congress that the Monroe Doctrine should be strictly enforced, and that the United States should aggressively expand into the West.
