The Shewan ruler becomes the dominant personality…
1888 CE to 1899 CE
The Shewan ruler becomes the dominant personality in Ethiopia and is recognized as Emperor Menelik II by all but Johannes's son and Ras Alula.
During the temporary period of confusion fol- lowing Johannes's death, the Italians are able to advance farther into the hinterland from Mitsiwa and establish a foothold in the highlands, from which Menelik is unable to dislodge them.
From 1889 until after the Second World War, Ethiopia is deprived of its maritime frontier and is forced to accept the presence of an ambitious European power on its borders.
