Kiev and the Dnieper left-bank part of Ukraine had become an autonomous Cossack state in 1667 under the suzerainty and protection of Moscow by the Truce of Andrusovo that had ended the Thirteen Years' War between Russia and Poland for control of Ukraine,

Further struggle had thereafter ensued against the Turks, with the Cossacks constantly changing sides and engaging in internecine disputes.

Kiev, finally yielded by Poland to Muscovy when the truce is finally confirmed by the Eternal Peace Treaty of 1686, stands as the sole Muscovite outpost on the right bank of the Dnieper.
