Kuwaiti allegiance is transferred to Great Britain…
1899 CE
Kuwaiti allegiance is transferred to Great Britain in 1899.
In the 1890s, Kuwait has been threatened by the Ottoman Empire.
In a bid to address its security issues, the ruler, Sheikh Mubarak Al Sabah, signs an agreement with the British government in India, subsequently known as the Anglo-Kuwaiti Agreement of 1899, and becomes a British protectorate.
This gives Britain exclusivity of access and trade with Kuwait, and excludes Iraq to the north from a port on the Persian Gulf.
The Sheikhdom of Kuwait will remain a British protectorate from 1899 until 1961.
