December 1659 CE
Lambert has lost support in London, the Navy declares for Parliament, and on December 24, 1659, the chastened Fleetwood approaches the Speaker, William Lenthal, asking him to recall the Rump Parliament.
The same day Lenthall takes possession of the Tower and appoints commissioners for its government.
The Rump meets again on December 26, 1659, and declares Monck commander-in-chief in England as well as Scotland.
Monck marches to London unopposed.
