Lambert promotes a petition from his army…
October 1659 CE
Lambert promotes a petition from his army that Fleetwood might be made lord-general and himself major-general, and the republican party in the House takes offense.
The Commons on October 12, 1659, cashiers Lambert and other officers, and retains Fleetwood as chief of a military council under the authority of the speaker.
On the next day, Lambert causes the doors of the House to be shut and the members kept out.
A new Committee of Safety, of which he is a member, is appointed on October 26.
He is also appointed major-general of all the forces in England and Scotland, Fleetwood being general.
