The Kangding-Luding earthquake of June 1, 1786…
June 1786 CE
The dam is about seventy meters high, holding back an estimated water volume of about fifty million cubic meters.
By June 9 the lake had started to flow over the dam and an aftershock on June 10 causes the dam to collapse suddenly, releasing the impounded water and devastating areas downstream.
The earthquake causes widespread damage in the epicentral area.
The city walls at Kangding collapse and severe damage to many houses and government buildings caused two hundred and fifty casualties.
In Luding County one hundred and eighty-one people are killed in collapsed buildings.
At both Qingxi and Yuexi, parts of the city walls are destroyed and many buildings are severely damaged, causing further casualties.
The flood that results from the landslide dam failure reaches the city of Leshan on June 11, causing collapse of part of the city walls.
Spectators who had gathered to watch the flood from the walls are thrown into the water.
The flood extends fourteen hundred kilometers (eight hundred and seventy miles) downstream and kills one hundred thousand people.
It is the second-deadliest landslide disaster on record
