October 1838 CE
Governor Boggs issues an executive order in response on October 27, 1838.
Known as the "Extermination Order,” it states that the Mormon community has "made war upon the people of this State" and that "the Mormons must be treated as enemies, and must be exterminated or driven from the State if necessary for the public peace.” (In 1976, Missouri Governor Christopher S. Bond will finally officially rescind the Extermination Order.)
Soon afterward, the twenty-five hundred troops from the state militia converge on the Mormon headquarters at Far West.
They raid Far West and ransack homes.
Colonel George M. Hinkle brings Smith and several other Church leaders to the Missouri Militia, and then hands the prisoners over to General Lucas.
They are held at Liberty Jail, and will spend several months in captivity.
