Lee, his plan to join with Johnston…
April 1865 CE
Lee, his plan to join with Johnston thwarted, has less than thirty thousand troops left and few rations.
He responds to a request by Grant to surrender on April 7, and asks for terms.
Meeting Grant at the Appomattox Court House in central Virginia on April 9, Lee surrenders on terms permitting his men to return home, officers to retain side arms, and all soldiers to keep their own horses and mules.
The Union army issues twenty-five thousand rations to the Confederates.
On April 10, Lee issues a farewell to his army: “the Army of Northern Virginia has been compelled to yield to overwhelming numbers and resources ... I have consented to this result ... from feeling that valor and devotion could accomplish nothing that could compensate for the loss that would have attended the continuation of the contest ...I earnestly pray that a merciful God will extend to you His blessing and protection ...I bid you an affectionate farewell.”
