Limburgish in the Middle Dutch Period
Limburgish, spoken in the area of modern Dutch and Belgian Limburg, was during the Middle Dutch period not clearly tied to a single political entity. Instead, it was divided among various territories, including the Duchy of Limburg, which was located further south than present-day Limburg. Other areas where Limburgish was spoken included parts of the Duchy of Brabant, the Duchy of Jülich, the Prince-Bishopric of Liège, and the Duchy of Guelders.
Linguistically, Limburgish was the most divergent of the Middle Dutch dialects, sharing many features with Middle High German. It was distinct in pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary, making it noticeably different from Flemish, Brabantian, and Hollandic.
Today, Limburgish is no longer considered a Dutch dialect, but rather a separate language, due to its historical development and unique linguistic characteristics.
