Little is known about Pedro Teixeira apart…
July 1641 CE
Little is known about Pedro Teixeira apart from the Amazon expedition.
After completing the expedition he had gone to São Luís do Maranhão to make his report to the governor and was duly promoted to Capitão-Mor.
He had accepted the post of governor of Pará on February 28, 1640 but had yielded the office after three months due to ill health; he dies on July 4, 1641.
Father Cristobal's report is published as a book in 1641.
In it, he gives a glowing account the Amazon regions and is especially complimentary towards the indigenous Brazilian natives and their way of life.
Although Father Cristóbal urges Spain to lose no time in settling the Amazon, his advice comes too late: in December 1640, King João IV had been proclaimed king of an independent Portugal and, in 1641, is to be proclaimed king of Brazil as well.
