Ljudevit Gaj, a Slovenian journalist and linguist has, with tacit Austrian approval, promoted a South Slavic literary language and devised a Latin-based script.

In 1836, he founds an anti-Hungarian journal that calls for Illyrian cultural and political unity.

Hungary fears the Illyrian movement and bans even public utterance of the word "Illyria."
