López has organized the resistance in the mountain range northeast of Asunción, with Piribebuy serving from December 1868 as the third capital of Paraguay.
The Count d'Eu leads the campaign against the Paraguayan resistance, the Campaign of the Mountain Range, which is to last over a year.
On August 12, 1869, sixteen hundred poorly armed men, many of them mere children, spend five hours resisting the assault of twenty thousand nine hundred allied Brazilian, Argentine and Uruguayan forces intent on conquest, before finally being overwhelmed.
At the end of the battle, in which the Hospital de Sangre is burnt down, along with all the wounded inside, many prisoners are decapitated.
