Many of the Seminoles, at the close of hostilities with the United States in 1841, join the sixty thousand Native Americans—Chickasaws and Choctaws of Mississippi, Creeks of Alabama and Cherokees of the southern Appalachians—who have already experienced the forced transfer to Indian Territory (modern Oklahoma) mandated by President Jackson.
