Maréchal de Turenne, through the French advances, has isolated the most important Spanish fortresses of Ypres, Lille and Mons.
However, instead of immediately besieging these locations, he decides to first move against Antwerp, in order to capitalize on the weakness of the Spanish forces.
This move fails, however, at Dendermonde, between Ghent and Brussels.
