Marshal Luxembourg, despite Louis falling ill and…
July 1693 CE
Marshal Luxembourg, despite Louis falling ill and having to retire to Versailles (never again to take to the battlefield with his army), defeats William’s army on July 29, 1693, at the bloody Battle of Landen, or Neerwinden, the name of the village near which William had taken up a strong position.
The charges by the French cavalry cost the French over eight thousand men; in contrast, the Alliance forces had lost about eighteen thousand in their third major defeat of the war.
The battle though, has little effect beyond attrition; despite suffering enormous casualties, William is able to maintain himself in the field.
