Henri Rousseau, being a simple man but…
1889 CE
His enthusiasm for the fair is so great that he writes a vaudeville play entitled A Visit to the Exposition of 1889 (which, however, he does not succeed in having produced).
In this play (as in other of his theatrical works), his naiveté reveals itself even more than in the technical aspects of his painting.
Also revealed, however, is an intense desire to express himself artistically; he even attempts to compose music.
Still, painting remains his only real gift.
Like his contemporaries the Impressionists, he is attracted by landscapes, and at this time he wishes to imitate nature.
