Mehmed’s tutors, Zaganos and Sihâbeddin, have begun…
May 1446 CE
Mehmed’s tutors, Zaganos and Sihâbeddin, have begun begin to incite the child sultan to undertake the capture of Constantinople, but Candarli engineers a revolt of the Janissaries and in May 1446 recalls Murad II to Edirne to resume the throne.
Twice during the reign of Murad II, a religious and artistic mind not very keen on holding power himself, has retired to the city of Manisa and Çandarli holds the effective helm in the capital Edirne with Mehmet II, still a child, as the nominal sultan.
On both occasions, upon the dangers presented by allied European armies attacking Ottoman territories, Çandarli has recalled Murad II and deposed Mehmet II to replace him with his father.
These two incidents lead to lasting resentment by Mehmet II towards Çandarli.
The Çandarli family having become extremely rich, possibly richer than the Ottomans, does not help ease the tension either.
