Northern workers fear that emancipation of slaves will cause an influx of Negro workers from the South, and employers do in fact use black workers as strikebreakers during this period.
Thus the white rioters eventually vent their wrath on the homes and businesses of innocent Negroes, and Civil War freedmen's associations are forced to send aid to their brethren in New York.
