Morgan now heads for Salem, where he immediately takes possession of the town and places guards over the stores and streets.

His cavalrymen burn the large brick depot, along with all the railcars on the track and the railroad bridges on each side of town.

They demand taxes from area flour and grist mills.

After looting stores and taking about five hundred dollars, they depart in the afternoon.
