As Morgan, with four hundred remaining men, heads away from the river into the interior of southern Ohio, he pauses at Nelsonville, a small town on the Hocking Canal.

His men burn ten wooden canal boats and set a covered bridge ablaze to slow their pursuers.

However, as soon as Morgan's raiders ride off, citizens rush to save the burning span.

Two hours later, Union cavalry arrives, delighted to find that the townspeople have prepared a feast for them.
